Full glass and a push in the right direction

It was a dark, rainy night when a hearty band of Toastmasters arrived in Greenmeadows for an engaging evening of prepared speeches, Table Topics, new member inductions and chocolate biscuits.

Sergeant-at-Arms Graeme brought the meeting to order promptly at 7:00 and handed over to the Toastmaster of the evening Roslynn. Following apologies and a reading of our Mission Statement by new member Arsh, General Evaluator Jan introduced her team of Grammarian Craig and Timekeeper Tony. Each explained their role, with Craig presenting the word of the night EXPEDITIOUS(LY).

Graeme returned to the floor as Table Topic Master and led the session allowing members, new and old, the opportunity to speak impromptu on a variety of topics.

Andy was then invited to introduce our first prepared speaker Steve, who presented “How full is your glass?” and Greg introduced our second prepared speaker Ian, who spoke about Toastmaster mentorship with “A push in the right direction”.

Following our supper break Roslynn led an expeditious business session – inducting our four new members Kiri, Arsh, Christian and Ali and then announcing our year end Awards Dinner for Monday, 24 July following an abbreviated meeting on that night. (Mark your calendars and bring a plate!)

Andy returned to the floor to give his evaluation of Steve’s presentation and taught us about ‘vocal range’ along with his solid, comprehensive report. Greg followed with his report on Ian’s presentation.

Each of the evaluators did a thorough job – reminding us of the speakers objectives, speaking in the third person throughout and finally commending their speaker for having met the objectives of their project.

Steve presented his evaluation of the Table Topic speakers, again speaking in the third person and providing a recommendation for each speaker demonstrating his excellent listening skills.

GE Jan and her team then presented their reports with Grammarian Craig giving a recap of the evening’s best use of English, how often his word of the night was used, and other observations. Timekeeper Tony expeditiously gave his report and commended Roslynn for keeping the meeting on (and even under) time!

Finally Jan gave her thoughts and observations in evaluating everyone who had not already been evaluated, including the Sergant-at-Arms, Toastmaster, the various evaluators and even her own team.

Awards were announced and Toastmaster Roslynn brought the meeting to a conclusion 12 minutes early!

Best Speaker : Ian            Best Evaluator : Greg
Best Table Topics : Ali      Best Contribution : Steve

Our next meeting is 10th July (1967, the change from pound, shillings & pence to dollars and cents)
