May 9th was the return to the usual fortnightly Napier Toastmasters after the catch-up meeting last week.
Toastmaster of the evening, Ros, prompt as always, got the meeting underway utilising one of her favourite Shakespeare quotes. Ros gave a fantastic intro to the evening with Song reading the mission statement. General Evaluator Greg introduced Timekeeper Mondie, and Grammarian Andy, with his word of the evening, “Beamish”.
Denise was the Table Topics Master (for the first time) and had some fun thought provoking questions for the evening. By her own admission, there was no particular theme, however that did not detract at all and there were many laughs to be had. Table Topics is a impromptu speaking exercise, where almost everyone can be asked to speak (guests with prior permission). This is a good thing to learn; how to speak off the cuff.
The first prepared speech of the night was Joyleen introduced by Ian. Joyleen gave a very topical speech on Mental Health. Joyleen spoke of several situations in her speech and drew in the audience for the entire speech.
Next up was Jan, introduced by Craig, with a follow up to her previous presentation in November about podcasting. Jan’s challenge to those in the club was to at least look at the podcasting option in their pathway (at level 4 in all paths). Listening to Jan ace her speech with her experience is always a pleasure.
Toastmaster Ros picked up that challenge and put it out there to at least investigate the podcasting and encouraged others to do so. Roll on Napier, podcasting enthusiasts for Toastmasters NZ!
Business section was delivered by Craig where he asked Ros for her experience at the District 112 Conference, where she represented Napier Toastmasters in the Table Topics section. Craig commended her performance and mentioned that videos of the sessions would be available soon.
Being VP Education, Ian also covered off next fortnight’s responsibilities which Greg commented in his General Evaluators report at the end of the evening; highlighting it was a welcome addition, especially for those that have busy schedules and so that they can keep up with their responsibilities.
Elections followed, where the new committee was voted in. Our new Committee is:
Following supper, Table Topics was evaluated by Steve, who “talked the talk” by flawlessly utilising the “CRC” method – Commend, Recommend, Commend, and summarised each table topics speaker providing each with at least one clear recommendation. He also came away with the Best Evaluator for the evening.
Ian gave his evaluation of Joyleen’s speech thoroughly and thoughtfully, commending her on several things including her growth since joining Toastmasters in 2019.
Craig then evaluated Jan, delivering an informative evaluation. He emphasised it is usual to provide recommendations as this is how the speaker improves, but felt other than the small use of notes, it was a brilliant speech by Jan. It tied in nicely with her previous speech by delivering a summary of it at the beginning.
General Evaluator Greg’s report covered the evening, and his team Andy and Mondie provided their reports, with lots of humour during Andy’s delivery, where Steve “won the cup” for using the word “Beamish” four times. Also of note, considering it was Mondie’s first time as Timekeeper, he provided a very informative delivery on the evenings time matters.
Ros rounded the evening with another great Shakespeare quote, and the meeting was closed.
NEXT MEETING; MONDAY 23rd May 7.00pm, Toastmaster - Graeme
