A polished performance from every one participating. Commencing with the opening of the meeting by Toastmaster Graeme who welcomed us all and asked for the guests Shane and Poppy to be introduced. An almost flawless opening from Graeme who when realised he has forgotten something is a master at covering up 😊 .
General Evaluator Steve introduced his team of Song as Timekeeper and Mondie as Grammarian who told us about his role and encouraged us to use his word of the night “promising”.
The meeting then got underway with Table Topics run by Ian. An impromptu speaking situation with Ians’ theme of using weather terms in any alternative situation the chosen speaker wanted.
First up was Graeme using the word “drizzle”. Spoke to the topic which was a nice change. Somehow he always manages to include his wife in his answers. He should bring her along sometime to defend herself!
Next, Joyleen on “lightening”. What a powerful performance from her based around her birth on the day the Inter Islander “Wahine” sank during a massive storm. Hard to know which was worse – the description of her birth or the storm!
Mondie was given the word “storm” which he used to describe his Mother and her Italian ancestry, Italians being given to “over excitement”.
Poppy is a planner. She used her word “spring” to describe her pleasure in planning her spring garden planting.
Our guest Shane volunteered to speak on “hurricanes”. Straight out he described how he wanted to join Toastmasters because he tended to talk like a hurricane – fast & furious and over quickly.
Last up was Song. “Snow” was her word which she used to describe how since moving to New Zealand she missed the snow she experienced growing up in China.
Our “formal speakers” all spoke from the Presentation Mastery Pathway.
Our first speaker, Denise, was ably introduced by Greg who covered the objectives of her presentation and the speaking path she had chosen. Her speech titled “Battle of Causeway” was centred around inter tribal Maori love and wars around Te Aute. A fascinating tale which I felt was new to most of the audience.
Next up was Andy introducing Craig with his speech “Team Work”. Craigs speech was centred around a employer “team bonding” experience at Guthrie Smith Outdoor Education centre. It sounded like a great experience but the actual team bonding may have left a bit to be desired! A well put together and delivered presentation.
We then moved into the evaluation of Table Topics by Jan. Jan showed her ability to think and listen to each Table Topics speaker with her evaluations that incorporated commendations and a recommendation for each speaker, the use of descriptive phrases and analogies enhancing her presentation.
A supper break including the clubs 'traditional' choccie biscuits gave everyone a chance to socialise before moving back into the second half of the meeting.
This got underway with Roz introducing our third speaker Tony, who did his best to convince us the title of his speech “It’s Okay to Lie” was appropriate. His focus on use of vocal variety paid off with a humorous presentation incorporating everyday examples on the benefits of a “little” lie.
His speech was followed by the evaluations of Denise’s speech by Greg, Craig's speech by Andy and Tony's speech by Roz. All evaluators were commended later in the evening by the General Evaluator on their ability to provide commendations and recommendations on the speakers presentation without repeating what the speaker had said.
A well organised Business Session run by Club President Craig kept us up to date with current club news, including a reminder the club will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in July!!!! Ian gave a run down on the Super 8 Secondary Schools speech contest that was judged by three of our club members. He described it as an example of how not to run a contest. Just as well Toastmasters were judges!
The General Evaluator Steve, along with his team of team Time Keeper Song and Grammarian Mondie wrapped up the evening. Song gave everyone their speaking times and Mondie gave us a list of who used his word of the night and his thoughts on use of English. Thankfully he thought everyone spoke well – showing their Toastmasters training!
Toastmaster Graeme conclude the meeting congratulating everyone on their rolls and invited the guests to provide feedback on their thoughts of the meeting.
NEXT MEETING; MONDAY 13th June 7.00pm, Toastmaster - Craig
