A wet and cold evening, with great speeches

Jan, as our Toastmaster for the evening had done her homework with a full and well presented programme.

We welcomed three returning guests and the return of past member Tony who ran the timing lights. Welcome back Tony, who was accompanied by his partner Poppy.

Our grammarian Karen encouraged us to use her chosen word of the night "dedicate", quite appropriate for all those who turned out on a wet and cold night.

Graeme started off the programme by introducing our first speaker Song. Song was presenting her first speech as a member of our club.

As an immigrant from China, now settled in Napier, English was not her first language and she gave a speech based around some humorous incidents learning our language. A well put together presentation, Song demonstrated plenty of confidence and easily met her objective of speaking before an audience.

Next up was Joyleen, introduced by Ian, who explained Joyleen’s speech from Level 2 of the Presentation Mastery pathway, would be centered around the issue of mental health in the workplace.  Joyleen’s objective was to deliver a speech with awareness of intentional and unintentional body language. Joyleen, as she has done in previous presentations, centred her message around her personal work environment and encouraged each of us to become aware of our attitudes and feelings and to reach out for help if we are having negative thoughts.

Roz, ah Roz - she loves to  present Table Topics 🙂 . Again she came up with something different with questions that all participants could easily answer, but required some thought. She asked us to imagine we were meeting a stranger at an event or party and gave some ideas on topics for striking up a conversation. Topics included; would you choose a pie or cake, would you prefer to be a driver or passenger, swim or sunbathe. Great answers and reasoning, but some were harder to choose from than others, e.g. why should we have to choose between a cake or pie - why not have both?

After a supper break which gave us a chance to meet our guests, Craig introduced our third speaker, Peter who was presenting the final speech in the last level in the Presentation Mastery Pathway.

Titled "Will the Masters team ever learn their lesson?". An hilarious review of their after match team talks after losing yet another football match. Peter's evaluator Craig, congratulated Peter on meeting his speech objectives  of presenting an organised speech from a leadership point of view using personal experience. Having achieved his initial goal, Peter announced he was taking a break from Toastmasters. We will miss his humorous tongue in cheek speeches and look forward to his return in due course.

Our final evaluation of the night was Table Topics from Greg who praised Roz on her theme and gave feedback to each speaker.

Karen showed her listening skills with her feedback on the word of the night and word pictures that captivated her interest. Tony told us how long each of us spoke and Steve as General Evaluator finished with a closing evaluation of the meeting.

Presentations of the night were awarded for;
Best Speaker - Song
Best Evaluator - Craig
Best Table Topics Speaker - Karen
Best Contribution of the night - Greg
