A great meeting indeed!

Toastmaster Dan opened the meeting, delivering a warm welcome to members and guests. This was Dan’s first time as Toastmaster and he handled his responsibilities well. Congratulations Dan.

Speaker one was Ian, speaking from one of the new pathways manuals. Ian’s icebreaker was all about Pathways, Toastmasters new education programme. Evaluator James displayed great listening skills, praising what Ian did well and offering constructive suggestions for improvement.

Ian - Base Camp Manager

Speaker two was Bill, delivering his icebreaker, “a bad day at the office”, sharing his experience as a pilot. The icebreaker as its name suggests, is the very first speech that at new member gives to the club. It is always exciting to see a new member take the plunge and get started as a speaker. Bill controlled his nerves and kept us entertained with his tales. Evaluator Amy, gave a very encouraging and warm evaluation and provided useful recommendations that will help Bill with his future speaking assignments.

Speaker three was Ashley, speaking from the Competent Communicator manual. In “Music and lyrics” Ashley talked about the soundtrack to his life and how songs and (in particular) lyrics can perfectly capture moments and times in our lives and give them special meaning. Evaluator Steve recounted the highlights of the speech, gave examples of the things that Ashley did well and made specific recommendations to help Ashley in his next speech.

Ashley - Musical theme speech

Table Topics Master Graeme mixed things up and gave speakers a progressive table topics challenge, giving three words (spaced out during the speech) to talk to. Table Topics Evaluators Steve and Craig displayed great humour. Each demonstrated good listening skills and offered a recommendation for improvement to the speakers.

Brenda - Talking about Art Deco in Marine Parade

Jane - The "Ruler" in the house

Grammarian Jane’s word of the day was stupendous, and several members were able to weave the word into their presentations and speaking roles. Jane’s report back to the club demonstrated good listening skills and was delivered in her usual good-humoured fashion.

Thanks to Timer Campbell, who kept the meeting running to time and reported back on how everybody did at the end of the meeting.

Thanks to Emma for her educational about the leadership roles available in the club; what they are and what’s involved. A timely explanation, given that it’s almost club officer election time.

Awards for the night:
Best speech – Ashley. Best evaluation – Amy. Best table topic – Kate. Best contribution - Ian.

Next meeting Monday 23 April, 7:00pm Greenmeadows East Community Hall
