Christine ran the evening efficiently, we had three guests, Brenda (a previous member of an Auckland Club), Carol visiting for the third time (and ready to sign up) and Campbell, a first time visitor, who all appeared to enjoy the evening and at least two are ready to become members.
Table Topics was first on the agenda and Daniel (one of our newer members) ran a very good session utilising a "bag full of excuses" which members were required to explain how and when they could be used. e.g. Rob (getting out of doing the housework) prefers to spend all his time in his "man-cave" where he tinkers for hours but doesn't really achieve much! Others to be involved were Amy, Kate, Ian, Brenda and all answered extremely well to what was an excellent idea for topics from Daniel.

Brenda - Talking about teenagers finding excuses |
Ian - Escaping in his mancave |
Sarah & James evaluated Table Topics and what an excellent Evaluation the two of them combined with. Sarah had some very positive comments for Daniel and James rounded the session of extremely well, while in between they had commendations for all the speakers and were able to find suggestions they felt each speaker could have utilised to improve their Table Topic. A really positive and supportive evaluation from them both.
Our first prepared speaker for the night was Heather, doing her Ice Breaker (first speech) and this was entitled "On Your Marks, Get Set, Bake!". Paul introduced Heather and made her feel at ease. Heather gave us an excellent Ice Breaker, explaining how she and her family love to share meals even though she admitted herself that she is not a great cook (twice cooked a chicken up-side-down!!) but how much she really enjoys cooking and hunting out the cook books and TV cooking shows. Heather certainly demonstrated how much she has overcome her nervousness since she joined a couple of months ago, and as her speech went on she looked more and more at ease. Excellent use of quotations and honesty, which gave us an insight into Heather, which is what the Ice Breaker is all about. She also concluded well giving us all a challenge to try our best in baking. Excellent work Heather.

Paul gave Heather some very good feedback in his Evaluation, certainly many worthwhile commendations and a couple of great suggestions regarding her use of notes.
Next Speaker was Layeequlla with Project Two from the Competent Communicator Manual "Organise your Speech" entitled "The Oldest Profession in the World!!" (no it was not about prostitution! It was Sales). This was an extremely well put together and delivered presentation from a new member of the Club, presenting only his second speech. Layeequlla set out the formula for a good salesperson - Listen, Maintain Eye Contact, Wait a few seconds and then speak positively with authority and knowledge. The delivery was presented without notes and in a dynamic fashion. Well done Layeequlla, we look forward to future presentations from you.
Layeeq - Talking about sales technique |
Steve later gave Layeequlla a very positive and well deserved Evaluation with many commendations.
Speech Three on the program was from one of the longer term members Peter, working from an Advanced Manual "Speciality Speeches" specifically "Sell a Product" and entitled "Great Value for Money". It was coincidental that we should have two "sales" type speeches on the one program but sometimes these things happen! Peter was attempting "to sell" us the concept of arranging for a well-known American Author and Investment Advisor, Robert Kiyosaki who has published over 50 books on investment and growing one's wealth to run a session in Napier when he visits NZ in September for a skiing holiday. Peter gave some very impressive details about Robert and I believe from the response at the end of his session persuaded well over 50% of those in attendance to fork out $50 to go and hear him speak. So you would have to say the the presentation was successful! A well thought out speech Peter (is it for real???).
Peter - Selling a Robert Kiyosaki event to the audience |
Graeme Evaluated Peter’s presentation and gave him worthwhile commendations while suggesting that perhaps he could have had a more impacting opening, but that he certainly achieved the objectives.
During the business session our President Craig made presentations to Ian on achieving his 4th Competent Communicator Award and Sarah on (finally) achieving her Advanced Communicator - Bronze Award. Well done to both of you and we look forward to the next goal being achieved! Steve presented Kate with her "Spirit of Success" Award for completing the first five speeches in the Competent Communicator Manual. A reminder about the Awards dinner on 17th July at Off The Track Restaurant in Havelock North starting at 6.30pm as well as Club Leadership Training to be held on Friday 21st July commencing at 6.30pm, mainly for Executive but anyone is welcome and there is to be a Judging Workshop. Venue: Salvation Army Rooms, Cnr Avenue Road & Warren Streets, Hastings.
Ian - Proudly posting with his 4th CC award! |
Kate - Celebrating the "Spirit of Success" award |
Sarah - All smiles with her ACB award |
Craig, General Evaluator, wrapped up the evening with his summary of the proceedings assisted by the Timekeeper Jane, who did a great job keeping us within the allotted two hours and Grammarian, Kate whose word of the night was "temerity" "which she had the temerity to use more than anyone else!
Overall an excellent meeting, we have one more meeting at Taradale Community Rooms (24th July) and then in August (14th) we will be back to Greenmeadows (Great!!)
