Tis the season for paint and 1200km bike rides!!

Overseen in capable fashion by our Toastmaster of the night Graeme, a very varied and interesting program shook our way at Napier Toastmasters meeting on Monday night.

Evaluation contest took place first. With six entrants at this year's contest, it took a little longer than planned to go through all contestants (meeting finished at 9.15pm - not really Graeme's fault). An excellent contest transpired with a test speech by David from Pania Club entitled “Chicken Run” was well evaluated by the six contestants - Peter, Kate, Craig, James, Emma and Paul. David spoke about the ‘shake up’ on Sunday night and the aftermath of what he and his wife did. A very humorous and entertaining speech and excellent material for the Evaluators.

The placings from the evaluation contest were 1st: Craig, 2nd: James and 3rd: Emma. It was really encouraging to see two of our more recent members giving the contest a go, both giving great evaluations which shows their value to the club. A big thank you to Ian for chairing the contest capably and visiting Judges Mike & Helen (Pania) and Ian (Hastings) for getting a result!

Unfortunately, due to time constraints at this stage, we had to forgo the Table Topics session, meaning the conclusion of the contest was followed by a supper break. In the second half of the meeting, we had the first of three prepared speeches. This was presented by Fiona with her assignment ‘Organise Your Speech’ via her speech title “What Do You Think Before You Paint?”An eye opening presentation (particularly for one currently redecorating) about the different brands and qualities of paint. It was well organised (which was the main objective) and spoken at an excellent pace. Excellent 2nd speech Fiona, with an improvement from the first speech which is what it is all about.

Peter evaluated Fiona and commended her on the pace, use of pause and concentrating on the opening, body and conclusion. He was also able to give Fiona two very useful suggestions for her next assignment. Well done to you both for the speech and the evaluation.

Next up was Emma with a “How To Say It” assignment entitled “Tis The Season”. This was a very good speech, well presented, entertaining, humorous and thought provoking all about the pros and cons of Christmas. An excellent use of word pictures and language brought Christmas alive for us and no doubt the pros out weigh the cons any day, particularly in Emma’s household.

Paul evaluated Emma’s presentation and had no problem with commendations a plenty. A very high standard of evaluation was achieved by Paul and no doubt Emma will derive benefit from it.

Our third speaker was Ian with an “Inspire Your Audience” assignment called “El Camino - The Journey”. Ian told us about his 1200km bike ride along the El Camino Way from France to Spain and in the time available could only touch on some of the highlights and "lowlights" of the trip over 14 days. A very interesting speech in which Ian was inspiring us to look at taking an adventurous holiday rather than the ‘run-of-the-mill’ visit to Australia, Fiji or even further abroad. Could you and your wife leave home for a five week holiday overseas trip with only a total 17kg of luggage and returning with only an approximately six kg extra? Well done Ian both on the ride and on the speech, we want to hear more about “the journey” in the future.

Kate evaluated Ian’s presentation and did a great job, with her limited experience.

The Grammarian for the night Kate summed up the grammar and the use of her word ‘verity’. The Timekeeper Ashley gave a succinct report on the time taken while the general Evaluator Craig gave the briefest General Evaluation known to the Club due to time constraint, with praises being given to the three great speeches and three proficient evaluations. He awarded best Speaker to Emma, Best Evaluator to Peter and Graeme gave the Best Contribution Award to Ian.

Ten members attended the meeting together with our visiting judges and three other guests. We certainly hope that they enjoyed the meeting and will return in the near future.
