Around 30 local Toastmasters (plus one from Rotorua) attended an excellent evening of entertainment at the Area D2 meeting on Friday evening 2nd September held at the Greenmeadows Community Centre in Napier.
Following the brief Council meeting run efficiently by Area Director (Ian- from Napier Club) the entertainment proper got underway with the Area Table Topics Contest under the Chairmanship of Craig. The topic selected (the same topic is answered by all contestants who draw for speaking order and then leave the room until their turn to speak) was “Should we live our dreams?” and this was well answered in differing fashions by the five contestants Ashley (Napier); Laurel (Pania); Paul (Hastings); Leighton (Havelock North); and Steve (Bay City). It certainly seems that we must live our dreams or there is not much to live for. Congratulations go to all the Contestants for reaching this level and also for the way in which they answered the question.
The placing's were: 1st Laurel (Pania Club) 2nd Ashley (Napier Club) and 3rd Steve (Bay City Club). Laurel will now hold the Robinson Cup for the next 12 months.

After a break and a chance to chat we had the Area D2 Humorous Speech Contest chaired by Ian (Hastings). Again , as one would expect at this level, this was of a high standard with five excellently funny and well presented presentations of 5/7 minutes each which no doubt tested the capacity of the judges. This is a contest where anyone who enters is to be sincerely congratulated as writing and presenting a Humorous speech is probably one of the more difficult assignments as a Toastmaster, but it can be done as proven by the five contestants on the night. They were Ry (Havelock North); Barbara (Pania); Christine (Bay City); Peter (Napier); and Paul (Hastings). Toastmaster’s contests have strict timing procedures and unfortunately in this contest one contestant exceeded the maximum of 7.5 minutes allowed, such a tragedy after all the effort involved. We heard everything from communication breakdowns to 15 year old testosterone filled young men and what they get up to, to speech suggestions for your daughter (waving one cooked and one uncooked sausages on forks!!), to security systems and even to the fear of Table Topics!
The placing’s were; 1st Paul (Hastings Club) 2nd; Christine (Bay City Club) and 3rd Ry (Havelock North Club). Paul will now hold the handsome Humorous Speech Trophy donated by David (Hastings Club) for 12 months.
The winners Laurel & Paul now go on to represent Area D2 at the Division D finals in Rotorua on Sunday 9th October where they will compete against the other five Areas in the Division. Why not take a note to go through and support them, I can assure you that it will be a great day’s entertainment and will not cost you anything (travel can be arranged!)
Well done to our Area Director Ian (Napier) for the organisation and running of a very successful evening. I can vouch that there is a great deal of arrangements that go on in the background to ensure that these events happen and happen successfully.
