Blood, Bees, Passion and Presley!

Hello there fellow Toastmasters! Thanks to all members who attended and contributed to another fun and educational evening at Napier Toastmasters Club, great to see you all there. Our very own Steve Tutbury ran a great meeting and much laughter was had by all, from what I could hear!

The General Evaluation was provided by Graeme, and what a thorough and helpful evaluation he presented, just like always! Thanks for your considerable efforts there Graeme, your attention to detail is always so appreciated. Graeme was supported by Grammarian Peter (good job Peter) and Sarah on the lights.

Chess presented a creative and successful TT session based around fairy-tales and nursery rhymes, great work Chess! Some very entertaining responses. And here I was planning to talk about my preferred election party and why I like their policies - so pleased I didn't have to go into that! Table Topics was very ably evaluated by the night's dynamic duo of Ching-Hui and Ian with some pertinent recommendations to all participants.

What colourful and varied speech topics we had tonight, quite a treat. Colin's speech, 'TCB' (Taking Care of Business') was a persuasive presentation and reflection on life's most important values, a great reminder to us all. Chris talked about 'Body Piercing' in the blood donation sense and he even managed to present dentists in a relatively positive light which at least one person in the Napier TM Club is extremely grateful for :) Sheryl discussed the plight of our precious bee population and gave us some great food for thought, even if only not to squash the errant bee that has found it's way into our house. Set it free in your neighbour's house!! (My idea, not Sheryl's). Danny presented a dramatic interpretive reading about murder, mayhem, violence and vengeance, thoroughly engrossing! Well done Danny.

Congratulations to the 4 evaluators for the meeting - very thorough and helpful evaluations. Speakers - try hard to incorporate your evaluator's recommendations in your next speech, they don't just give you recommendations to make themselves sound knowledgeable!

President Colin led a well-run business session and I felt the entire evening was a great success.

Come along and check out Napier TM if you live in the area, I know you will have a fun time and we love having guests and new members along. You will grow in confidence in your public speaking skills, and so much more. See you all on the 14 November!

  1. I particularly enjoyed Graeme's general evaluation. The points he made were not only relevant for all who participated in the meeting; the evaluation was really well structured and broken down into easily digested chunks of information. It's an evaluation that appeared effortless, and is certainly worth emulating next time I'm rostered for this role.

  2. Although I didn't speak on the night may I add a postscript to Sheryl and Dannys speeches. Sheryl lamented our missing bees but you can make a difference growing borage in your garden as it will encourage them to visit you. It works for our garden :)
For those interested in Guy Maupassant stories (Dannys speech) you'll find second hand copies at the Little Book Shop in Latham Street.

  3. I thoroughly agree with Sarahs comments about the evaluations tonight. I would have been pleased to receive the feedback given, from any one of the evaluators. Graeme's general evaluation should have been recorded! Perhaps we could have an educational on this topic.
Does anyone else besides me wonder why feedback in the work place is apparently one of the most difficult tasks that managers face and yet WE make it an art form at TM?

  4. Another tremendous meeting with some really excellent contributions from everyone. I felt Danny's speech was fantastically presented and most enjoyable, how does she remember so much??
However Danny, remember that the objective of this assignment is to READ a story, that is greatly different to telling a story, even it was word perfect.
