A damp evening for an Evaluation Contest

Our first formal meeting of the year, was opened by Ian, who read out a list of apologies, mainly due to the inclement weather. Also, our visiting judges from Hastings were stuck in traffic and decided to turn back rather than queue an extra hour to make the trip. The communication from Brian, was just magic. Also, apologies from Jacqui, our Area Director, who would have had to come from Havelock North.

So 8 Toastmasters, plus 1 guest, Heath, got on with things; and manipulated the programme accordingly. A half impromptu test speech was given by Ian; “a stitch in time” was delivered. Denise took control of the lights, for both the contest and meeting.  All 4 contestants; Jan, Craig, Steve and Andy were all fired up, and provided exceptionally good evaluations. It should be noted that all evaluators would have been worthy of moving forward to represent our Club. In the end, the tie breaker judge was required to seperate and provide an eventual winner.   Well done to Jan, who goes on to the Area Contest, being held Friday, 17 March.

With no supper, a short interval occurred, then Steve provided the opportunity for all attendees to partake in Table Topics.  Steve decided to focus on more general topics e.g. your best holiday ever, what do you do to relax, what great sport event would you like to revisit etc.  A great choice Steve, with everyone having the opportunity to practice their impromptu speaking skills.

Roslynn ran the Business session; Area Contest (possibly in Hastings or maybe zoom??) on Friday, 17 March, with Division Contest on 2 April.

Ian asked for volunteers to help judge the Hastings Toastmaster Club this Thursday, 2 March. A lift is provided so we will be in one car, and minimise traffic over to Hastings.

Craig mentioned a new scheme where the “international” component of our subs could shortly be paid directly to TM WHQ.  Also, our 6 monthly subs are due, early bird fee of $110, if paid by 20th March. This includes the international US component. The fee is $10 more than our last semis, due to the deteriorating exchange rate between NZ$ and US$.

Thanks to all that attended and making the meeting worth coming out for in the rain.

Next meeting; 14 March
