Four guests, four great speeches matched with four great
evaluations and an inventive table topics session. Who could ask for more?
Napier Toastmasters Club’s meetings are always a treat; well
organised, full of fun and a decent supper to boot!
That organisation was evidenced by Graeme’s (our Sergeant at Arms) set up of the
room and host Kelly’s early attendance to greet our guests. Thanks to Graeme and his helpers and to Kelly.
Toastmaster Karen was well organised too, communicating with
role holders and having a well-paced agenda prepared in advance, so that our
meeting could run to time. All of Karen’s toastmaster skills were to the fore
this evening; warmly welcoming the speakers and role holders and providing good
linking segments between the speakers. Nice job Mrs B!
William and Jen as part of the General Evaluation team
explained their respective roles of Timer and Grammarian. Jen set us the
challenge of using the word of the day and also reported back to the meeting at
the end, remarking on good turns of phrase and who use the word of the day, persistent. Compliments to our first time Timekeepers,
William and Nigel. Well done!
Table Topics Master Tony took us back to the 1980s with his
VHS collection of film titles. Tony is demonstrating real innovation when it
comes to setting Table Topics. He’s setting the bar high...can we match
him? Table Topics Speakers were Andy,
Kerry, Jen, Ian, James, and Jane.
Table Topics Evaluators Alwyn and Craig were a great
combination of youth and experience, delivering upbeat, informative and
constructive feedback for Tony and our speakers. Nice work, guys!
Speaker one was Peter B, introduced and evaluated by Ashely.
Peter talked about mentoring. At the start of his speech, Peter treated the
club to his version of Bryan Adams’
“Everything I do, I do it for you”, which was directed at his wife, Karen. Can
it get any better?? It was a humorous take on how, as a mentor, Karen is trying
to improve Pete’s potential, supported by a wider team that includes his
in-laws. This speech showcased Peter’s comic writing talents and his confidence
in delivering humorous material.
Speaker two was Joyleen, introduced and evaluated by Jane.
Joyleen was repeating her ice breaker, specifically addressing the
recommendations for improvement from the first time. This is a chance for new
speakers to have another go at familiar material and see how things are
different once feedback is incorporated. Joyleen delivered confidently and
showed improvement.
Speaker three was Ros, introduced and evaluated by Graeme.
Ros delivered a speech that had a research focus and Ros took the opportunity
to explain Napier City Council’s new recycling scheme and plastic types one to
seven. A potentially boring topic was evaluated to something quite interesting,
reflecting Ros’ developing Toastmaster skills. Great job Ros!
Speaker four was Jan, introduced and evaluated by Ian. Jan
was speaking about her communication style with “The Ballad of Beatrice”. Jan’s
delivery included a lengthy narrative, made interesting by great use of vocal
variety and expression. Characters were clearly differentiated and making that
part of the speech very enjoyable. Jan
then went on to explain in detail how to best communicate with people with
analytical style: use facts, data and keep the emotion out! An informative
speech, well delivered.
All four evaluators gave considered, constructive and
encouraging evaluations to our speakers, highlighting what they did well and
giving suggestions and examples of where and how to improve. Napier Club’s
strength in evaluations is why our club is full of great speakers. Long may it
continue.
Awards for the night:

Best evaluator – Jane.

– Andy (guest).
