First meeting of 2018

On a hot a steamy night Napier Toastmasters got their regular meeting year underway on Monday 12th February with an excellent program arranged by the Toastmaster of the night James. While their were a number of apologies from members, we had no fewer than 12 guests at the meeting and what excellent meeting it was to witness the quality that speakers have attained since being members of the Club.

After introductions (with the Air Conditioning on full) Jane gave us a very good series of Table Topics, where a member choose an envelope of the Board and then proceeded to give us a speech between 1 to 2 minutes on the subject therein which were based around holidays. i.e the importance of different days (Waitangi day for example) the reason for holidays etc. All speakers spoke well to their selected topic, Ashley, Ian, Patrick, Carol, Delan and one of the guests Karen. Well done to all who took part and also to Jane for her imagination in coming up with the topics. Patrick took the honours for the Best Table Topic for his Table Topic on the "Holiday he fell in Love".
The Table topics were extremely well evaluated by Emma who was able to give each speaker many commendations and also found a suggestion for each speaker to think about for improvement. Her evaluation was empathic and informative.

Our first prepared speech was by Kate, and she did not disappoint in her presentation based around HOPE. She demonstrated great maturity and wisdom for one so young and as usual, her presentation skills were to the fore, plus the use of a number of very worthwhile quotes during her speech which had a definite message for each of us. Well done Kate you thoroughly deserved the Best Speaker Award!

Kate's speech was well evaluated by Ian, who had given her an excellent introduction, including for the number of guests, the value of the Evaluation process at Toastmasters. Ian had some very worthwhile suggestions for Kate particularly to utilise more pauses for greater effect.

Our second speaker was Layeeq with a presentation entitled "My Best Friend-A serial Killer!" He had a excellent build, up keeping the audience in expectation explaining about his relationship with his "friend", and then showed us his "friend", a packet of cigarettes!! Well done Layeeq, an excellent presentation, which of course had a great message for us all.

Amy introduced and evaluated Layeeq and summarised his presentation excellently, once again being able to give him a couple of suggestions for improvement, in her opinion. This earnt her the Best Evaluator Award for the night.

Craig gave us an Education session on the International Speech contest to be held at the next meeting and encouraged all members to take part.

He then carried out the business session with several dates to remember:

22nd February - Pania's Contest night at our venue commencing 7.00pm. Judges and a test speaker for the Evaluation Conte4st required.

23rd February - Area Leadership Training for the Club Executive.

2nd/16th March - Area Council Day for International and Evaluation Contests.

5th March - Napier Club Executive meeting.

15th April - Division "D" Conference.

The meeting was wound up with the General Evaluator (Craig as a last minute replacement) giving his thoughts on those not already evaluated and assisted ably by the Timekeeper Carol and Grammarian, Patrick, whose word of the night "euphoria" was well utilised.

The guests were given an opportunity to comment on the meeting and all spoke positively about their experience.

Well done James, an excellent meeting with several last minute changes, which were well handled and so, so many guests to cater for!!

All come along on 26th February to hear our International Speech Contest!! 7.00pm.
