Toastmaster Peter opened the meeting, delivering a warm welcome to members and guests. After whipping through the apologies and introduction of guests we got straight into what Toastmasters is all about – developing speaking and leadership skills. Tonight we had a number of new members performing roles for the very first time; Heather as Table Topics Master, Campbell as Grammarian and Patrick as timer.
Speaker one was Ian, with his entertaining retelling of day one of his epic cycle tour of France. “Read the sign, stupid” was a salutary reminder of just what can go wrong when there’s a language barrier between you and your destination. Merde! Ian gave a polished performance with humour aplenty. Evaluator Steve gave us a master class in how to deliver an effective evaluation, he displayed good listening skills and gave constructive suggestions for improvement.
Speaker two was Kate, speaking from the competent communicator manual assignment #6, which is all about vocal variety. In “To phobia or not to phobia”, Kate discussed the difference between a fear and phobia and talked about the world’s weirdest phobias. If you obsess about whether a duck is looking at you, congratulations; you’ve made the top five! Evaluator Jane (delivering her very first evaluation BTW) did a fine job, praising what Kate did well and offering suggestions for where Kate could lift her game. Jane also threw down a challenge to make her already impressive performance even better.
Speaker three was Sarah, speaking from the Storytelling manual (for advanced speakers). In “Greed and obsession” Sarah recounted the cheating scandal that rocked the UK production of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? It was a riveting tale, full of suspense and intrigue. Sarah’s delivery was well paced and her use of language was especially good, adding drama to an already dramatic story. Evaluator Christine recounted the highlights of the speech, and gave examples of the things that Sarah did well and made specific recommendations to help Sarah in her next speech.
Table Topics Master Heather used a prop bag full of weird and wonderful goodies (Goldilocks pot scrubbers, pebbles, towels to name a few) to get the impromptu speaking session sparking. Table Topics Evaluators Graeme and Ashleigh were a great double team, displaying great humour and sparking off each other. Each demonstrated good listening skills and offered a recommendation for improvement to the speakers.
Grammarian Campbell’s word of the day was passionate, and several speakers were able to weave the word into their speeches. Campbell’s report back to the club at the end of the meeting also included impressive phrases that were used by members during the meeting.
Special thanks to first time Timer Patrick who tried his best to keep the meeting to time; (what’s that bell for anyway?) And thanks also to Daniel for showing Patrick the timing ropes.
Thanks to Craig for his educational – meeting roles and responsibilities. A timely explanation of who does what, to make sure that all our meetings are fun and are run properly.
Big congratulations to Jane for coming second in the recent Division speech competition with her hilarious speech “move it”. Well done Jane.
Jane farewelled Rob Neale who is leaving the club. Jane’s goodbye was full of humour, humanity and innovation. We’ll miss you, Rob.
Awards for the night:
Best speech – Kate. Best evaluation – Jane. Best table topic – Rob. Best contribution - Jane.
Please note: Next meeting is Monday 30 October, 7:00pm Greenmeadows East Community Hall
