What a wonderfully colourful, entertaining meeting was held at the Napier Toastmasters, Monday 14th August. The meeting was located back in our usual hall after the building had been seismic strengthened. Our Toastmaster Rob called the meeting to order on time, and also informed us that Napier is in one of the highest quake zones in our fair country… yikes! Rob defined seismic strengthening to put our minds at rest... Hmmmm.
A colourful table topics session was run by Jane who captured our imaginations as soon as she took the floor dressed in a colourful pink sari with a pink flower in her hair. A wide variety of costume dress ups were the props the lucky participants had to draw from, and with a fun theme of "Just Stop Caring" the speakers could have as much fun with the costumes as they liked, limited only by their own imaginations.
Speaker one was Daniel, introduced by Kate. Dressed in a school uniform, Daniel really set the theme for his speech. By sharing his "school report feedback" he took us on a journey, reminding us all not to take things too seriously, and we mind what other’s opinions of us may be.
Layeeq was our second speaker for the evening, introduced by Peter. Layeeq presented a very thought provoking speech titled "Who Am I?" His speech was bursting with information information about India, his home country. Some things we learned include the fact that such games as Chess and Snakes and Ladders originated there. Also, with a population of 1.25 billion people India has 22 languages, with 750+ dialects. Such an interesting, informative speech, Layeeq really made us all think twice about the rich cultural heritage around the world.
Delan was the third speaker, introduced by Craig. Delan shared more insight into who he is, and we learned his favourite hobby was watching stand up comedy. Not only was Delan’s speech humourous, but also educational – he taught us the "physiology" of a good joke (and punch line). As he unfolded the origins of his hobby, it felt like a trip down memory lane. Very vivid, we felt we were there with him.
During the business session, president Craig presented the last of the awards from the Napier Toastmasters annual award ceremony.
Emma was presented with Most Improved Speaker, and also the award for Best Speaker.
Steve was presented with his Advanced Communicator Silver award.
We were happy to witness the induction of our newest member, Campbell. Jane coordinated Campbell’s induction ceremony; still in a colourful, fun style which was a very fitting theme for the evening!
Steve, VP Education presented Craig with his Competent Leader award.
The evening’s awards were presented by Rob. Well done to Lisa (a first time guest) who won the award for best Table Topic.
Layeeq won best speaker, and Best Evaluator was Kate.
Best Contribution went to Jane – which was very fitting considering the injection of colour and fun she gave the whole evening.
Well done everybody, what an entertaining session.
Excellent report on another great meeting, six guests would have been impressed by what we can assist them with!
