A Salubrious Meeting with a Mothers Day Theme

That’s what we had at Napier Toastmasters this week and in a temporary new venue of the Taradale Community Rooms as the Greenmeadow Rooms are undertaking Earthquake strengthening during this month and we hope to be back there in June.

An excellent turnout of members attended and we had a past member, Chess come along to see what we are up to these days.

Toastmaster of the night was, Amy and she appeared in her dressing gown, shower cap and slippers, sucking on a lolly and looking really laid back as she told us the theme for the evening was to be Mother’s Day (only one day late!).

Mother Amy
Amy carried the role out well during the evening (although the dressing gown came off in the heat) and interspersed the items on the programme with quotes and facts about Mother’s Day (appropriate as her mother Netta, is one of our valued members and actually had a speech assignment later in the programme.) Well done , Amy, you did not disappoint in doing something a little different –great!

Table Topics were capable run by Sarah, who utilised the pairing up of members with one doing the vocals and the other standing behind them doing the gestures, it worked really well with lots of laughter and good fun, plus some sensible answers to her questions. First pair were Steve and Christine (husband and wife!) with “How To Best Pack a Suitcase”-bikini, togs, toothbrush and perhaps a change of underwear was all that’s required!

Steve and Christine

Next up was James and Wayne (welcome back Wayne) with “ Making A Pizza From Scratch”, apparently Jame’s wife makes most of the Pizzas so he did not have a lot of specifics but got there in the end-with a helping hand or two from Wayne.

Rachel and Chess were the next ‘victims’ with “Dusting the Lounge” this pair did extremely well, plenty of talk and action although I am not sure about the ‘square dusting’! Nick and Graeme had “Caring for a Child with a Bleeding Knee” and if I had a sore knee I know where I would ‘bleeding well’ not go! Tracey and Kate were next “Multi Tasking” and with both being females this would not be a problem for them. An excellent session Sarah and all those who took part, well done.

Paul introduced our first speaker (Mum) Netta with a speech from the Entertaining Speaker Manual entitled “On Your Bike”. Netta told us about the trials and tribulations of getting her out on the many cycle ways around the Bay but now she is converted, particularly where there is a “coffee stop” on the way! A well told story that had excellent action and humour, plus an incentive for us all to get “On Your Bike”. Might see you out there one day Netta but watch out for the cow pats! A really enjoyable speech Netta, congratulations.

In Paul’s evaluation he gave Netta many well deserved commendations and even managed a recommendation or two. One of his best Evaluations for a while.

Chris, regaled us next with the advantages of being on the Club Executive (Elections at the next meeting on 23rd May) and this session went really well, with Chris expounding the definite advantages to members to further their leadership skills and being assisted by the current Executive members in attendance in letting newer members know what each position involves. Everyone should seriously consider being a Club Officer and then do something about it!!

Peter and Emma then evaluated Table Topics and what a tremendous job they did, Peter is an ‘old’ hand and it would be expected from him but Emma as a new member (and I believe doing her first evaluation of any kind) really excelled and is to be sincerely congratulated on her effort. Well done to both of you.

After a break (and some Chocolate bikies) Steve introduced our next speaker Robyn.Robyn was doing Project Three in the Competent Communicator Manual ‘Get To The Point’ with a speech entitled “If I don’t , who will?”. Well this was an eye opener for some of us and Robyn, who works as an Educator for D.O.C, explained about the Earth’s water resources and what we can do to keep them healthy and ‘salubrious’. (PS That means not killing Mosquitos!)

An good choice of topic and very educational and interesting, Robyn , delivered in a very easy to listen to manner. Excellent!

Steve, in his evaluation had many commendations for Robyn and also found three worthwhile recommendation that Robyn can work on for future speeches, I am sure Robyn will take these on board, as we all should.

Then we had a surprise on the programme with Chess (our past member and guest) sharing a very sincere and personal story with us about her heart problems she encountered last year.

Chess
The presentation loosely prepared impromptually gave us an insight into the need to watch our own health and we sincerely thank Chess for sharing this with us. It showed that Chess had lost none of her excellent speaking skills and when she gives up swimming on Monday nights we would love to see her back in the Club.

Following a brief business session the meeting wound up with our General Evaluator, Colin (a.k.a. as ‘Opinion Man’) giving us his insights into how the meeting flowed and how the Toastmaster and Evaluators had performed. This was an interesting and insightful Evaluation by Colin, who ‘thinks about what he is going to say and then says what he thinks’ and he often comes up with some very interesting and valid points to ponder. Let’s remember that Evaluations are one person’s opinion and if you don’t express it then an improvement may be missed, and we are all here to improve! Well done Colin.
Colin
Colin was assisted by the Timekeepers, Nick and Tracey and Nick gave a clear and succinct report, the Grammarian Craig, whose word for the night was ‘salubrious’ which was utilised about 5 times during the evening, commented on word pictures that ‘tickled his fancy’ and the meeting finished on a high with Graeme (who had not had a chance to speak during the evening-although he did gesture during Table Topics!!) stating that without an Executive we do not have a Club! Certainly food for thought.

Awards presented:
  • Best Table Topic: Rachael and Chess.
  • Best Evaluator: Steve
  • Best Speaker: Robyn
  • Best Contribution: Chess
We do it all again on 23rd May, same place, love to see you there!

Craig.
