Cooking Up a Storm

Toastmaster Amy opened the meeting recorded the apologies and read the club mission statement. Our General Evaluator Craig introduced his team Timekeepers Nick and Chris. Grammarian Martin presented his word for the night “Eclectic”
First item on the programme was Table topics an opportunity to practice speaking “off the cuff” Tracey was the Table Topics master and presented a variation on the “7 days” TV show game called “Caption that” - the participants were called to the front shown a picture of a recent news item and were asked to provide a “caption” for the item and to explain the news item.

First speaker was Christine - her picture was of the 2 people in metal cages.

Caption Shark Hunting. Christine spoke about the home made cages made for observing shark in their natural environment

Martin was presented with a picture of very large underpants. Martin was familiar with this story about an underwear manufacturer looking for the oldest pair of their undies still being worn.

Alastair’s picture was of a sheep and a man standing behind it. Alastair decided this man was a vet but was in fact a reporter.

Chris’s picture was of a baker with a tray of pies. Caption award winning pies. Chris moonlights as a baker during the night and has always dreamed of wining a pie award. He announced that this was a picture of his dream coming true.

Our final speaker Amy’s picture was of a man restrained with seatbelts and tape. Turns out Amy had been spiking his drinks on a flight to America. He became unruly and had to be restrained. Well done Tracey for an interesting session.

The table topic speakers were ably evaluated by Sheryl and Sarah giving all the speakers helpful suggestions.

Our first speaker Wayne was introduced by Netta Speech entitled “Cookies”.

Netta's Introduction
Wayne was speaking from the advanced manual “Speaking to inform”. Wayne was concerned about making a mess so we adjourned to the adjacent kitchen for his demonstration of how to make a batch of chocolate chip cookies and we were promised a sample with our cup of tea later in the programme. And very nice they were too. Thanks Wayne.

Our second speaker Johno was introduced by Steve. Steve told us a little about Johno who was giving his Icebreaker - the first speech in the Competent Communicator – the main objective of this project is to introduce the speaker to the club which Johno certainly did in a unique way in his speech titled “A Native returns” Well done Johno and we look forward to your next speech.

Our third speaker Graeme was introduced by Sarah. Graeme’s speech entitled “Decision Time” had an intriguing opening which captured our attention. He went on to describe a time in his earlier life when he was not in good health and the consequences of this. Graeme persuaded us to be very careful with our health a very timely message thanks Graeme.

Graeme

Our forth Speaker Peter Manson was also presenting an Advanced Manual Assignment. The Cold call from the Persuasive Speaking manual. This project is split into 3 parts Firstly a 3–4 minute speech giving a short introduction of the chosen scenario ,then a 5–7 minute role play, followed by 2–3 minute discussion Total time 10–14 minutes. Peter chose to sell a house lot of paint to a passerby at a trade stand who was thinking about repainting the house. A challenging assignment ably presented by Peter Well done.

Our new president Chris presented the Business session

Firstly, our newest members Johno and Rachel were inducted into the club Welcome to you both. Secondly Chris thanked Sarah and Sarah for their work in arranging and hosting the Awards nite.

Johno and Rachel Formally Welcomed to the Club by Chris

Sheryl presented the financial statements and a budget for the coming year. Wayne went over the forward programme. Certificates were presented:
  • Competent Leader to Chris
  • Advanced Communicator Bronze to Sarah Lee

Well done to both of you – a lot of hard work but very satisfying to achieve these awards.

The Evaluators Netta Steve Sarah and James ably evaluated the speeches giving lots of good feedback to the speakers. Well done for achieving a high standard of evaluation – I’m sure all the speakers found your thoughts very helpful.

Craig gave us his thoughts on the meeting including evaluators with good suggestions as to what was done well and some suggestions for improvement. Nick reported on the timing of the meeting which finished a few minutes late and Martin gave us his Grammarian’s report.

Amy presented the nights awards :
  • Best Speaker Johno
  • Best Evaluator Sarah
  • Best Table Topics Chris
  • Best Contribution Netta

I laughed, I learned something and was moved intrigued and inspired as always a most enjoyable evening special thanks to all the participants and the audience.
