Graeme (our Toastmaster for the night) got us off to a punctual start, Tracey read the mission statement, and Christine (General Evaluator) introduced her team.
James explained his role as Grammarian, and with humour shared the word of the evening – Procrastinate. Ian explained his role as Time-keeper (shared with Tracey) and the use of the lights and bell.
Sarah and Her List of Topics |
We were then ready for arguably the most exciting part of any Toastmasters meeting……Table Topics, capably run by Sarah H. Members worked in pairs with the first person speaking but not gesturing and the second person gesturing but not speaking. This led to many hilarious moments!
Colin and Peter were tasked with telling/showing us how to change a tyre. Colin directed Peter to ‘catch the attention of a passing car by showing a bit of leg’. Mmmmm. No further comment.
Peter and Colin |
Graeme and Steve |
Netta & Sarah |
Wayne and Nick demonstrated fantastic teamwork when sharing the experience of riding the world’s scariest water slide. Wayne spoke expressively and Nick acted out the scenario in a very amusing way. No nerves visible there.
Ian and Christine were charged with describing a day in the life of a Formula One racing driver. Ian was heard to say, “Drop your clutch!” which Christine did with vigour. Goodness Christine. Don’t get too revved up!
Next, Peter introduced Craig, who gave the first prepared speech for the evening.
Craig’s speech was entitled In Pursuit of Adventure.
With humour, he told us the highs and lows of his week at an outdoor pursuits centre. Despite his initial trepidation, Craig found work to be particularly hum-drum after that, and would have preferred the pursuit of more adventure. That must be why he enjoys Toastmasters so much.
Then, Steve introduced Dee with her speech Keeping an Open Mind.
Dee spoke of that 6th sense and all things psychic. Through personal experience, Dee moved from being a sceptic to being a supporter. I’m with you Dee.
Netta introduced Chris as a boy of many talents. Did you know he is a published author and even designed the cover of the book! Chris shared some of his own writing entitled The Moral of the Story and despite feeling under the weather had us all entranced with words such as, ‘Like slipping into the carcus of a freshly killed horse on a freezing cold night.’
Wayne and Colin were our Table Topics evaluators for the night. Wayne gave his evaluations with humour and many gestures and smiles. Colin suggested to Nick that the next time he gets undressed on stage he might like to hide around the corner a little……. What on earth do we get up to at these meetings?
Well, after all that excitement we all needed a break!!!!
In his evaluation of Craig’s speech, Peter noted that he’d connected with each and every member of the audience.
In his evaluation of Dee’s speech, Steve commended her use of personal experience.
Netta described Chris’ speech as original, gripping and just a little bit gory!
Nick has joined the club and was formally inducted by Dee. Welcome Nick.
James, Tracey and Christine gave the Grammarian’s, Timekeeper’s and General Evaluator’s reports respectively.
Tonight was another great meeting with a great bunch of people. Thank you everybody.
