Toastmaster Dee |
The General Evaluator, Craig was ably assisted by his grammarian, Sarah Lee and timekeepers Netta and Hannah. Sarah introduced us to the word of the evening which was Sanguine, which means an optimistic or positive attitude especially in difficult situations. “He is sanguine about prospects of the global economy.” This word was used seven times throughout the whole evening.
Wayne gave us an interesting and entertaining table topics session, which was to give us a reason why a certain topic was your favourite and why it should be everyone’s favourite as well.
First Amy had to explain what her favourite kitchen utensil was and why. She led us on a journey of the spoon and all its uses, as it is versatile, a loving gesture and a musical instrument.
Lana explained her favourite holiday location was the South Island, around Queenstown and how all the colours were beautiful. Lana also urged us all to experience the Otago rail trail for ourselves.
Colin expressed his favourite Christmas present was a half-a-million red Ferrari bought by his good mate Graeme, then admitted this topic was hard because he doesn’t get many presents and maybe next Christmas we could all remember Colin.
Richard entertained us all with his description of Curling as his favourite sport to watch. Thanks to the Olympics. He gave us a rundown of how to play curling … first off you need your little curly thing… That would be a stone.
Hannah finished off the table topics session with her description of Christchurch as her favourite city, because ‘every day is different’ and you also get all those extra days off.
Richard and Peter were our table topics evaluators. They overcame the miscommunication of who was doing the introduction, but what followed were clear and concise evaluations which followed the Commend Recommend and Commend formula. Everyone could take away a recommendation to improve on the art of impromptu speaking.
Kim Stewart gave her Icebreaker speech, although Kim is an accomplished toastmaster, she took this opportunity to introduce herself to her club.

Kim - Taking Stock |
'Taking Stock' was the title of Kim’s speech. She took us on a journey of her life whilst being prompted with artefacts from a ‘stock pot’. A wonderful speech which allowed us to get to know the many sides of Kim.
In Graeme’s evaluation on Kim’s speech, he recapped the objectives and reiterated what a lovely speech Kim delivered, with great use of speech rate, pause and body language.
The second speaker this evening was Christine whose speech was from the advanced communicator manual.
Christine’s speech clarified some of the language we were to hear and their meanings. She then went on to deliver a confident and compelling rendition of the poem, which was also her speech title, 'The Highway Man'.
Ian had the pleasure of evaluating Christine’s speech and he once again followed the CRC method. Ian expressed that Christine set the scene added value, but believed better positioning on the stage would have had further impact.
Tony Stewart also gave his icebreaker speech as a means to introduce himself to the club. “My Salute to Miley” cleverly linked his background of truck driving and his current work in the demolition industry, that he does not need a wrecking ball to make him happy, just give him a machine. Tony also talked about how Toastmasters is for everyone.

Tony's Salute to Miley |
Sheryl’s evaluation reflected everyone’s opinion on what a well delivered speech Tony gave. He reflected his elements of an experienced speaker and his wonderful use of humour throughout his speech.
Business session run by the President Craig, outlined:
- The Leadership training coming up (this Friday)
- Council meetings
- Subs are due
- Upcoming International Speech Competition

Chris handed out certificates of participation and placing’s from the Evaluation Contest – but get them back to him because he forgot to sign them ;)
Also on the 31st of March there will be an additional toastmasters evening. The focus for the evening will be speeches. No verbal evaluations will be given. This is a chance for many of us to complete another speech as our club is so healthy in numbers it can take a while to cycle through every one.
Stephen gave an informative education session on the Leadership Manual – make sure you get it checked off because you only need to do 21 out of the 44 tasks!
The evening was concluded with Craig’s general evaluation of the evening. Dee was congratulated on her first time round as Toastmaster, with an excellent clear programme. The evening ran well and there was good use of the theme ‘Celebrations’. Evaluators were commended on their system and their positive feedback.
