Inheritances, Hobbies, Mutant Statistics and Sugar

Welcome Fellow Toastmasters and Guests

Thanks to all who attended and contributed to an extremely entertaining and inspirational meeting on Monday night.  A big welcome to three new guests Geoff, Hannah and Averill as well as returning guest Lana. Fantastic to have you along and hope to see you back again soon.

Our Toastmaster for the evening was Steve Tutbury who was welcoming and did an awesome job of adapting the programme for those last minute changes to accommodate speakers’ needs.  Steve multi-tasked and calmly bridged any gaps in the programme with ease and that kept the evening flowing.

Graeme introduced his role as General Evaluator and for the benefit of our guests provided a very thorough General Evaluation at the close of the meeting. Graeme’s was ably supported by a team consisting of the Time Keeper and Grammarian.   Dee Ford (assisted by Ian Wright) did an extremely thorough job in her first go as the Timekeeper. Christine Tutbury added a lot of “Rationale” to the evening as Grammarian.

Our multi-tasking Toastmaster, Steve Tutbury, also stood in as Table Topics Master.  Steve gave a detailed introduction of his theme – by reading a letter explaining that each of the impromptu speakers had the opportunity to receive an inheritance from their wealthy Uncles Estate.  But first they had to provide reasons why they would be the most appropriate guardian for precious and unusual items from the Uncles eclectic collection of treasures.
  • Colin spoke of hoarding when it came to inheriting 6 Pink Flamingo figures.
  • Christine saw many opportunities to use and share a collection of Top Hats.
  • Graeme avoided speaking on unbelievable objects
  • Sarah Lee was transported down memory lane to her first car at the thought of the green 1977 VW Beetle with pink poka dots.
  • James had some confusion on what a collection of air sickness bags actually were.
An interesting array of topics providing good scope for the speakers and resulted in an entertaining and fun session – well done everybody.

Sheryl and Netta teamed up to give the table topic evaluation and summary with some praise worthy commendations and recommendation for our impromptu speakers.

Our first formal speaker was David Grant giving an Icebreaker speech.  David provided us insights into the many hobbies he had tried over the years, but particularly spoke with passion on home brewing and all the skills he had learnt along the way.

Our second Speaker was Wayne Bickers who was making good use of Visual Aides.  Wayne highlighted how “mutant statistics” impact our lives.   Wayne provided a number of examples of what “appeared” reputable statistics or information that we could rely on, but challenged the audiences thinking by questioning the validity of some of the statistics.

Chris was doing an advance project and provided us with an assimilated broadcast entitled “pass the sugar”.  Assisted by camera man, Colin Anderson, Chris was a news anchor providing a well-paced human interest piece on sugar in our diets.

Speeches were well evaluated by James, Amy and Sarah Lee respectively.  Evaluations were of a high standard by all, with excellent first time Speech Evaluations by Amy and Sarah Lee.  There was good use of the CRC approach with commendations and recommendations for each speaker to take into their next projects.

The Business Session included:
  • Christine provided a timely reminder of what a great read the monthly Toastmaster magazine is
  • Presentation of name badge to Dee Ford and formal welcome of her to the Club. Great to have you as a new member Dee.
  • The forward programme for the 24th of June was covered
  • Reminder of the Club annual Dinner and Awards night is coming up on the 29th July
  • Voting was held regarding the 3 options of Speight’s, Off the Track and Breakers for the venue for the dinner.  Breakers came out the winner by a clear majority.

Thank you everyone for a terrific and fun night!

The Awards for the night went to……

Best Evaluator: Amy Edwards
Best Table Topics: Sarah Lee (a gold chocolate bar presented to the inheritance winner)
Best Contribution: Not Awarded
Congratulations to you all.

Have a great fortnight and look forward to seeing you on the 24th July 2013!

    1. I think the 24th July refers to the end of year awards nite.
