It was another entertaining and informative meeting on
Monday night, sadly with no guests and a number of apologies for the night,
however that did not stop the fun for the rest of us!
Graeme Valentine stepped in at short notice to do a
grand job as Toastmaster, for which he had been ably assisted in preparation by
James Kan. Always willing to step in and
help out, many thanks to Graeme for doing this.
Christine Tutbury explained her role as General
Evaluator and introduced her team. James Ward was Fortuitous in his role as Grammarian
for the night. Jan made good use of the
stop watch and kept the meeting to time.
Netta introduced Table Topics which had the
challenging theme - making head lies out of newspaper Headlines.
- Amy confidently and imaginatively gave her explanation
of how “Scientist bite back with doggy DNA”, all in the promotion of aiding
better health and healing.- Chris spoke on “Mayhem blamed on gate crashes” and used humour to link that to the mayhem his late arrival had caused that evening.
- Steve came up with a mystical adventure about running into horses on a dark country road and after doing a flip in the car encountered Snow Whites Coach – all bearing no relevance to his headline of “Hang up your boots but never forget them”
- Sarah H stalled in “Ginkgo company can’t recall gifts to wife” but we did hear a lot about a goldfishes 3 second memory, and an interesting impersonation of fish swimming, or were they prancing??
-
- Sheryl’s daughters dream wasn’t a nightmare and it did come true when she competed at NZ Marching Champs.
Well done to Netta on a fantastic first go at running
Table Topics.
Ian was commendable in his solo evaluation of all the Table
Topic speakers, commenting very fluently on each speaker with little reference
to notes, showing us just what a master of observation, listening and
critiquing he is.
Three formal speeches and an Educational Session followed.
Our third speaker was Amy
Edwards who took us back to an emotional time when her family
experienced the big 40 second earthquake in the Christchurch. Amy used some fantastic descriptive words to
create vivid images that captivated the audience and took them on the journey with
her, experiencing and sharing the terror of the event and how it affects her
and her family still.
All speeches were well evaluated by Sheryl, Chris and
Steve respectively. Constructive comments and examples were given on how to add
strength and impact to speeches through vocal variety, slowing speech rate, and delivering
punchy openings and endings.
Sarah Hall, assisted by members of the existing
executive, gave an educational on the roles of the Executive committee of a
toastmaster club. Club officer elections
are coming up in May and this is an excellent way to get more involved with
Toastmasters. Start thinking about which club officer role you might like to
take on in the year ahead. I can recommend it as a very worthwhile experience.
Sheryl stood in for President Craig for the Business
Session.
-
Certificate handed to Peter for second place in
International Speech Contest.- The Forward programme was covered
- Area Governor visit will be at next meeting
- Reminder to club executive that the next monthly meeting is at Craig’s next Monday 15th
- District Conference is 10th to 12th May
Christine concluded the evening with a thorough General
Evaluation, summing up the meeting well and in good time!
Congratulations to all the Award winners for the night ……
