Riding Elephants

Kia Ora fellow Toastmasters,

Well another fun and educational TM meeting last night - you agree?  A fantastic turnout of 22 people.  We welcomed two first-time guests Simon and Ayman, and welcomed back guests Hamish and Joost.  Simon even joined up on the night!

Congratulations to Craig for chairing a superbly run meeting, and finishing on time as well.  Sheryl debuted in the General Evaluator's role and I thought she did an outstanding job - you look and sound like you've been evaluating for many years Sheryl!  Some excellent feedback to our evaluators and many useful recommendations made for a very effective report that was a great example to us all.

Sheryl was ably assisted by our efficient Timekeeper Jan and creative Grammarian Lucy, who brought us the word militate (meaning 'less likely to make succeed').

James W led a novel and fun TT session themed 'Journeying around NZ' - interesting places to go and intriguing modes of transport.  Great job James!  And well done to all the Table Topics participants, especially the returning guests Hamish and Joost, for giving it a go.  The Table Topics responses were very well evaluated by Ian and David.  I felt the Table Topics evaluations were of a particularly high standard AGAIN last night with some well thought out recommendations.  Deciding to have two Table Topics evaluators seems to have been a great move for the club with the evaluation standard getting higher and higher.   Thanks Ian and David.

James K initiated the prepared speech segment of the evening with 'Stop Smoking - Easier Than Ever Before!'  An informative and educational speech encouraging smokers to quit and advising what support your local pharmacy can give.  And for those non-smoking Toastmasters, as I say to my dental patients, if you don't smoke, don't start!!  Christine followed up with her final Humorous manual speech, 'Learning A New Skill'.  I bet none of you would have guessed this skill was how to ride an elephant!  An entertaining and informative speech that may well come in useful to some of us one day if we travel to Thailand or India or decide to get a job in Wellington zoo!

James W presented our third prepared speech for the night, 'A Reader Lives A Thousand Lives'.  A wonderful speech inspiring us all to read more, and I'm sure James didn't mean the t.v. guide!  Graeme then followed with a light hearted and amusing tale, 'My Great Adventure', a delightful account of a childhood experience down South.

The speech evaluations were once again of a very high standard thanks to Peter, Paul, Colin and Emily.  Before presenting a speech, no matter how long you've been a Toastmaster, I encourage you to read your old evaluations and apply the recommendations given, you will be amazed at your progress.

Awards for the evening:
Best Speaker: James Ward
Best Evaluator: Emily Murray
Best Table Topics: Sarah Hall
Best Contribution of the Night: Sheryl for her General Evaluation

Look forward to seeing you at our next meeting 11 June, same time, same place.
