Kia Ora Napier Toastmasters,
Thanks to everyone who attended our meeting last night and helped to make it a fun and enjoyable evening, where hopefully we all learnt something to improve our communication and leadership skills. We welcomed guests Susan, Stephanie and Akshay - wonderful to have you along and hope to see you all again!
Well done Ian for doing a great job as Toastmaster! I really liked the way Ian bridged between presenters and added his own unique flavour to the evening.
Steve presented an excellent General Evaluator's report, many useful recommendations and points of praise for all our evaluators. Steve was accompanied by team members Jan (our Grammarian who came up with a great word 'retrospective' that was used widely throughout the evening), and James K (who did a very thorough job as timekeeper). James seemed to take to the timekeeper's role like a duck to water - something to do with his love of counting and pharmacy?!
Chris led a novel yet challenging Table Topics session. Speakers were asked to comment on statements that made assertions without providing evidence, and most of us struggled to keep to the topic, but well done Chris for trying something new! The Table Topics speakers were very ably evaluated by Colin and Sheryl who rose to the occasion.
We were treated to four varied and intriguing speeches last night. James W presented 'A small leak can sink a great ship', an informative and educational speech about business processes and how to improve business management. A creative speech concept James and a well presented speech. Craig gave an entertaining account of his recent trip to the Australian Tennis Open with 'Got the t-shirt!', encouraging us all to attend this wonderful event in Melbourne at least once in our lifetime. Tickets on the Robinsons?!
Emily presented a dramatic powerful speech 'Unbroken' about castaways being bombed by the Japanese, I haven't heard such vocal colour or seen such demonstrative gestures in a long time in our club! Well done Emily. Lucy presented a wonderful speech 'A piece of paradise', her personal account of her experiences in the property market. I loved how Lucy revealed that 'intentionally acting dumb' was a powerful negotiating tactic and I encourage you all to use that at least once this week!!
The four speeches were very capably evaluated by Peter, Christine, David and Paul respectively. Colin led a well-run business session.
Awards for the night:
Best TT: Graeme Valentine
Best Speaker: Emily Murray
Best Evaluator: Christine Tutbury
Best Contribution of the Night: Paul McPherson for being our TM's 'right hand man'
Look forward to seeing you all at our next meeting on Monday 16 April (Note 3 WEEKS away due to Easter) and the following meeting will be a fortnight after that, Monday 30 April.

Great Speech Emily!
ReplyDeleteWith your vivid visual vocabulary and powerful delivery, it really felt like being there on the raft and being in the water with the sharks!
Well done Sarah, another great wrap up of the meeting, which I really enjoyed after my speech!
ReplyDeleteExcellent to continue to see guests coming along on a regular basis, trust they liked what they saw and will be back!
What a tremendous effort by Emily with her 'speech',terrific vocal variety and gestures(which was what she was trying to achieve-and she certainly did) my only recommendation would be (for others thinking of using the same idea) was it a speech??
Well done Lucy on your second speech, very interesting and full of great ideas, I wish I could be retrospective about buying my first home!Peter's evaluations continue to shine and assist the speaker.
