Club Leadership Training

If you thought Toastmasters only provides you with the opportunity to speak, think again.
It takes organisation, team work and leadership to build and maintain a successful club.

Not only are there leadership opportunities within each club, there are leadership opportunities at area level (a group of clubs), division level (a group of areas), district level (New Zealand) and beyond.
Club Leadership Training, 10 February 2012

If you have ever fancied yourself as a leader (or world domination feels somewhat elusive), and you have wondered how to obtain the necessary skills, then consider joining Napier Toastmasters. And, get yourself nominated in the up & coming elections. (Still months away, so there is plenty of time).

As a club officer, you will receive all the support required to learn and fulfill your role, and there is a range of roles to choose from.

On the 10th of February, Club Leadership Training was provided for club officers.

Steve Tutbury as MC led a dynamic learning experience for all attendees.

Despite many attempts by Mother Nature to close the border between Hawke's Bay and the Manawatu, Roger Hynd dodged border control by using the Saddle Track. Roger facilitated an excellent discussion on critical success factors and the Distinguished Club Programme.

Brian Mangin got us all thinking about succession planning. One suggestion was for club officers to start grooming their successors early on in the term; thereby providing a seamless transition from one executive committee to the next and easing prospective officers into their new roles.

This is the third time that I have had the pleasure of seeing David Gore in action, and he never disappoints. David ran a dynamic session on parliamentary procedure. For those of you who are interested, there are a number of resources to keep an eye out for. They are 'The Chairman's Craft' by John R. Milligan, 'Guide for Meetings & Organisations' by N.E. Renton, 'Members' Meetings in New Zealand by Mark von Dadelszen, and David's own book, The SpeakUP Book About Chairing Meetings.

In groups, we discussed our own club leadership roles and found out what we should be doing!  A number of excellent suggestions came to the fore, for example, putting out press releases to promote the club.

Colin Bond introduced us to www.easy-speak.org, a powerful cloud-based application that all club members can use to chart their own progress and manage club meetings.

Astarte gave us an informative presentation on everything we needed to know about proxies; what they are and how they are assigned. We were then told of the realignment of district boundaries and some of the implications for local clubs. If a club wants to align themselves with another area or division, their submission needs to reach Astarte by the 20th of February 2012.

Soon after, Steve thanked everyone for attending and closed the meeting. It was a great evening and well worth attending. For me the highlight was learning more about parliamentary procedure, and I have been inspired to research this area more thoroughly. Thanks David.

  1. This was far from my first Club Leadership Training, but every time I attend I learn something new. Toastmasters training, sometimes you think it will be the same old, same old, continues to evolve and many enthusiastic members means new ideas are always being showcased. The meeting was a credit to the work put in by the presenters.

  2. I have just about attended more Leadership Trainings than I have had 'hot dinners', but they continue to draw me back as you can always learn something new and meet other "committed" Toastmasters who keep our Clubs operational and generally successful. This one was no exception and like Chris I really enjoyed David's presentation on Palimmentary procedure, if you have not heard this man speak then your life is not complete. He always does something different and novel, which makes the subject extremely interesting and educational,OH! to have his creative thinking powers!!!

  3. This year I commit to buying a 2012 dairy so I can write down all the things I need to attend. For example, this training meeting that I missed. My apologies. I was actually looking forward to going but I got the dates mixed up.
